Brighton United Lodge is an amalgamation of the mother Lodge (MacDonnell Lodge No. 10 founded in 1860) and two of its daughter Lodges (The Brighton Lodge No. 108 founded in 1922, and Lodge St Leonards No. 131 founded in 1928). These Lodges decided to amalgamate in 2001 at a time when attendances were less than desirable, and premises in High Street, Glenelg required too much of an investment burden from its members. The result of these amalgamations is a strong Lodge in terms of membership and finance.
Our membership "mix" is varied, including young, middle and senior aged Brethren, ensuring a genuine welcome to all age groups.
Our commitment to charity and the local community results in several $000s being donated to S.A. schools and charities (both local and national) each year, through fundraising activities and use of investments.
The Brighton Masonic Centre is owned freehold by the Lodge, and run on a commercial basis by its Facility Management Committee of members from all Craft Lodges that meet at the complex. They manage both the masonic complex, and the car park opposite. The Windsor Cinema Theatre (part of the complex) is leased out separately. There are opportunities for public hire of the MacDonnell Room for up to 120 people, with excellent kitchen facilities and comfortable furnishings. These are hired on a regular basis by such organisations as Probus and Legacy, as well as for other groups and functions. The whole complex is serviced by reverse cycle air conditioning, providing a comfortable environment for all activities all year round.
Various other related masonic septs and degrees meet at Brighton Masonic Centre, including Mark and Chapter, with many of our Brethren belonging to each.
